It’s tasting time again! This time I present you two Highland Park Whiskys, which I was able to taste at the masterclass with Martin Markvardsen at the Finest Spirits Festival 2018 in Munich! I hope I can get my hands on The Light, which will come out in the next time and accompanies The Dark I tasted back in January. And before you start ranting (The Dark will cost you around 250€), wait for my next Article on next Sunday! In the meantime, you might read my interview with Martin Markvardsen. It’s also related to that matter as Martin told me: “Not every Whisky was made for everyone!” But now enjoy the two Whiskys from Highland Park.

Highland Park – Full Volume

Distillery: Highland Park
Age: n.a.s. (around 17yo)
Cask: 100% 1st fill ex-bourbon
Alcohol: 47,2%
Colour: golden

Nose: There’s lemon, apple, vanilla and some barley. Quite light and fresh in the nose. Didn’t get any of the typical Highland Park peat. To be honest, usually HP’s are very gentle with the peat, maybe I just missed it here.

Palate: Nope, still no peat. Maybe a hint, but more like highland ginger. But lots of Toffee, some nutty flavours and quite spicy!

Finish: Long and warming.

Overall: That’s a nice one! Very gentle in the beginning but right after the first sip it cranks up the flavours.

My rating: 18/20/20/20 = 78 out of 100.

Highland Park – The Dark

Distillery: Highland Park
Age: 17yo
Cask: ex-Sherry
Alcohol: 52,9%
Colour: amber

Nose: Yupp, there’s the typically HP peat. Also dried fruits, some leather and Toffee. There are some sherry and spicy flavours too.

Palate: Intense, very spicy and sherry heavy. Also some chocolate and sweetness from honey.

Finish: Warming, not short but also not very long.

Overall: Well, it is definitely a nice dram. I’m glad I was able to taste this Whisky! But that said, I’m not willing to pay the price for it, which is totally fine with me!

My rating: 20/20/20/19 = 79 out of 100.

So if I want a Highland Park, I’d go with the first one. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the second one just as much as the first one. But at that price, the second one is just not for me. As will be the next three Whiskys I am tasting. I won’t tell you which one they are going to be, but I can tell you this: Even if I like them very very very much, I am not going to buy them. Why not? Well, you will have to wait till next Sunday 3 p.m.!
